As castles and fortification go in this part of the world, it is very modern. The Torres Vigia (Watchtowers) and the Castillo de San Luis in Estepona were all built during or just after the Moorish period of Spanish history, the 700 years when the invaders from North Africa lived in this part of Spain and there were constant attempts from either Moors or Christians to protect their local population against the other.

Early in the 20th century, the castle began to be used as living quarters by poor locals who had no home of their own, and as late as 1975 there were 70 or so people still living there in very unhygienic conditions, before the castle was taken over by the Ayuntamiento (Town Council).

By the middle of the 19th century, it had lost its military use, and was taken over by the Coast Guard in an attempt to prevent smuggling. The Coast guard stayed there for about 50 years, until their new quarters were built nearby.

Instead of being a medieval construction, the Castle at La Duquesa was built in 1767 during the reign of King Carlos III to protect the coast against marauding pirates, still from North Africa. By the early 19th century, the danger came not from the south but from the north, as French troops invaded the area and took over the castle, where they were attacked by the English naval forces round about the time of the battle of Trafalgar.

Very well restored, the castle nowadays houses the Archaeological Museum, the Fencing Museum, Public Library and Exhibition Hall. It is also used by local brides as an attractive background for their wedding photos.
